NOvel energy storage technologies usable at MilitAry Deployments in forward operating bases
(NOMAD)

NOMAD Project addresses the reduction of energy dependence and the improvement of energy security in bases, camps and other infrastructures isolated from energy networks, through the development of technologies and their adaptation and validation for use in military environments. The main objective of this project is to strengthen the European Defense industry in the field of energy storage, evaluating technologies and systems, and validating them in relevant environments.

  • Consortium of 18 organisations from 8 EU Member States plus Norway.
  • Led by EQUIPOS MÓVILES DE CAMPAÑA ARPA and composed of large companies, SMEs, researchorganisations and a cluster.
  • Coordinated by the Spanish Ministry of Defence.
  • Funded mainly by the European Union’s DG DEFIS.

Relationship with PESCO through the Energy Operational Function Project

This project is also financially supported by the Ministries of Defence of Estonia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, the Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia and Spain.

As a result of this project, the most promising technologies have been evaluated and selected taking into account KPIs and requirements. Multiple energy storage configurations have been assessed and 3 technological demonstrators 20′ containers will be developed integrating these different energy storage systems and auxilary technologies, based on building blocks and functional modules. They will be tested in different geographical locations, covering different meteorological and climatic conditions.
